Hospitality in The Missing Place

Creating workplaces people want to return to
More than a physical place
Hospitality in The Missing Place. Every organization has a workplace. An office. A meeting room. A digital environment. But there is another place. A place you will not find on a floor plan and one that cannot be built with concrete, glass, or steel. That place is The Missing Place.
In my book The Missing Place, I describe this place as the invisible space where people truly connect. It is where trust is built, ideas emerge naturally, culture becomes tangible, and collaboration transforms into belonging. It is the place we once took for granted until hybrid working, digitalization, and physical distance made us realize what we had actually lost.
A place you can feel
The Missing Place is not a location. It is a feeling. The feeling that you are welcome. That you are seen. That you belong. That you arrive with enthusiasm and leave with renewed energy. That is exactly why hospitality plays such a crucial role.
Hospitality brings The Missing Place to life
Hospitality is the force that makes The Missing Place visible. Without hospitality, an office remains a building. A meeting room remains just another room. A virtual meeting remains another appointment on the calendar. Only when people truly feel welcome does something far more valuable emerge: genuine connection. It begins the moment someone walks through the door. A sincere greeting. A smile. A colleague standing up to welcome you. A cup of coffee that is not simply offered, but shared. These may seem like small moments, yet this is where culture is created.
People return because of people
Today, many organizations invest heavily in inspiring offices, hospitality concepts, coffee bars, collaboration spaces, and beautifully designed interiors. All of that matters. But in the end, it is not the furniture or the architecture that makes people want to return. People do not come back for a desk. They come back for the people. For the conversations. For the energy. For the feeling of belonging.
The place where connection grows
That is the essence of The Missing Place. Organizations do not need to persuade employees to come to the office. They need to create a place where people genuinely want to be. A place where encounters happen naturally. Where collaboration grows through trust. Where ideas emerge between meetings. Where people are not only productive, but also connected. Hospitality is not a facility service, nor is it limited to a friendly reception desk. Hospitality is the culture that makes people feel welcome every single day. It determines whether an office remains a collection of workstations or becomes a true community.
The soul of The Missing Place
Perhaps that is the most important message of The Missing Place. The future of work is not about spending more time at home or more time in the office. It is about creating places where people genuinely want to meet again. In the end, we do not miss buildings. We miss the feeling that great places give us. And that is exactly where hospitality begins. Hospitality is the soul of The Missing Place. Without hospitality, it remains a building. With hospitality, it becomes a place people genuinely want to return to.
